SPECIAL INFORMATION FOR COLLEGES:

Check out the four types of show you can book on the:TOURING SHOWS PAGE Kate Rigg. Photo by Helen Tansey

The page you are on for colleges explains a few more of the politics of each show and how they play on campus to audiences who want a culturally edifying learning experience from an original, multicultural voice, or just some awesome entertainment from a reknowned A/PI artist. The academic impact of the shows can be emphasized when seeking funding as all the shows are examples of modern, multimedia, cross cultural experiences, and feature perpectives on culture, feminism, colonial politics, race and representation, women in the arts and virtuostic performance styles which combine classical training with an urban voice. All of the shows listed here cover topics like the changing identity of the modern Amerasian, the deconstruction of racial labels, contemporary politics, and mixed race issues. Or it's just cool music, and jokes. Your choice.

stand-up comedy-or-hosting-- Kate can bring a full length comedy show in which she performs edgy, urban slanted comedy, on contemporary politics, race in america, mixed race issues, post feminist cultural theory, colonial politics, and some just random fun stuff too. Or the whole thing can be dirty jokes, whatever you want. Clean or dirrrrty she can and will host any event and tailor comedy to your school (she has hosted: City wide Asian American Awareness Festivals, Gay Pride NYC, Sing Along Sound of Music nationally, International Cultural Events, The Indonesian National Pavilion, Weddings, Parties, A/PI Heritage Celebrations at Many Schools, Fundraisers, Women's events etc etc. etc.) You set the censorship limits and Kate brings you the freaky funny comedy. As a special bonus she may bring any number of songs or parodies or characters from the theatrical shows and pepper the set with them. A terrific evening of comedy and satire from an original voice that brings diversity and some kick ass style to your school.

Slanty Eyed Mama:Kate Rigg. Photo by Leda A slanty Eyed Mama show consists of many original spoken word lyrical hip hop and rock pieces, plus a healthy dose of spoken word poetry and freestyling, all with a funky urban asian slant. Accompanied by AMAZING and virtuostic electronic violinist Lyris Hung (former Juilliard Classical violinist turned bad assed rocker) the show is actually a variety show where you get some comedy, a lot of music, spoken word and some freestyle! This show has a cast of two but has a dynamic multimedia feel because of the ultra modern way Lyris plays her electric guitar, the asian american driven lyrics of Slanty Eyed Mama in songs like "Me Love You Long Time" and "Yellow Fever" and a relentless new musical style. Typically a thought provoking, high energy show that rocks hard and showcases the best of Kate Rigg's cultural voice. Very versatile, we have played in front of 5000 people in a stadium, on theater stages, in college lecture halls and libraries, and in the middle of outdoor plazas. All you need is a sound system and Slanty is there.

Birth of a nASIAN: This is A more theatrical experience, with a combination of character monologues and stand-up enhanced by the electronic violin of Lyris hung, and punctuated with some of the spoken word rants of Slanty Eyed Mama. It requires something akin to a theater space (with lights/ a sound board etc and enough playing space). A fave at theater festivals, it has also been performed at The Comedy Central Theater in L.A., at theaters across the nation, and will be performed at the Smithsonian Freer Sackler Galery Performance Space this May 2008 for A/PI Heritage Month.

Kate's Chink-O-Rama: May also be booked and requires 4-5 cast, one tech, a sound system and a stage. On some occasions a redux version may be performed with only Kate plus either MC Chink Daddy or MC PhD, depending on venue and budget.

Bring some new flavor to your campus, wake up the multi culti mixed media mixed breed in your student population's collective consciousness…

Some Letters From Students

"Thank you for being part of a discussion that as you said doesn't exist enough, and for being very articulate about how you'd like to see this discussion take place between the Asian Cosbys and Chris Rocks whenever they may surface."-After Slanty Eyed Mama at the Smithsonian

Hi Kate,      I used to work at Asian American Recovery Services and was fortunate enough to volunteer at the conference yesterday.  I just wanted to send you a note to tell you that your performance was not only entertaining, but very powerful.  You are an awesome role model for the girls and really made them feel proud about themselves.  It's always a good feeling when you see someone who enjoys what they do.  But it's even better when they use their gifts to inspire others.  Thank you for sharing your gifts and energy with us.  I hope to see you in the Bay Area this summer, or even catch one of your shows on my next trip to New York!

Dear Kate,
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!
I saw your show last Thursday night at the Center for Cultural Exchange in Portland, ME and I was freaking happy and overjoyed. You and Lyris were amazing and unbelievable. As a Filipino American, I have been growing up feeling invisible, oppressed by my country and my family, and thrown in a model minority box. The worst part was that I felt totally alone, like no one could understand.
But after seeing your show, I felt completely validated and that I am not alone. I felt FINALLY someone speaks the truth about Asian culture and growing up Asian in America, and pulls no punches.

Hey Kate.
I just saw your performance of Slanted Eyed Mama at Mt.Holyoke and loved it. I haven't been to many presentations with multicultural/multiracial asian female performers and I'm very glad that I had the opportunity to see you. You give us multiracial/cultural asian girls hope to make it out there. Thank you. =)

You really made a statement for the Asian Pacific Islander Organization and on behalf of my members we all thank you as well!! P.S. I feel very proud and I feel like I have more confidence in myself than I ever had in my whole entire life.--Sonoma State

Dear Kate, I just wanted to thank-you for doing what you do.  I saw your show at Brava tonight and immediately went home and e-mailed everyone I knew to tell them to go see your show, all while listening to your CD.  I have a feeling I will take in a few more shows before you leave. Your show and the anthology Half and Half have done so much to finally make me feel not only comfortable in my own skin, but proud as well.  From the bottom of my heart I thank you.
