Slanty Eyed Mama Quickly gaining a large following in the spoken word and urban music communities, Slanty Eyed Mama is a trip hop exploration of contemporary Asian American identity with lyrics and fierce rapping by Kate, and through samples, beats, and musical enigmas created by Lyris Hung ex-Juilliard virtuoso turned supersonic electronic violonic diva. The sound is fresh, aggressive and urban. The project was conceived so that the funky urban asian woman could represent! in the language of hip hop and contemporary rap. Slanty Eyed Mama has toured through Western Australia as part of the Perth International Arts Festival on the same stages as acts like Laurie Anderson and Marianne Faithfull. They play regularly in New York at the Bowery Poetry Club and recently turned it out for a National Lampoon International Comedy DVD as the musical act. They headlined the Asian American Heritage Festival in Union Square Park in spring 2003, and were the headliners at 10th anniversary Black and Blue Ball in NYC. Their music and philosophy was featured in a PBS special called "Race is the Place" which will air in fall 2004. Some of the music is featured in Kate's play Birth of a nASIAN. With songs like "Me Love you Long Time", "Mulan", "What R-U?" Slanty Eyed Mama are favourites at campuses all over North America, lauded for their dynamic in your face attitude, political musings through rap and fresh sounds.
